Ayurveda is a science of medicine that originated in India 5000 years ago.

In Sanskrit, Ayu means life and Veda means knowledge. Ayurveda focuses on a healthy lifestyle, prevention of disease, and rejuvenation.

I was deeply touched the moment I attended a short introduction to Ayurveda given by Dr. Jayagopal. He shared the basic philosophy of Ayurveda which is helping to prevent illness and provide early treatments.

After years of work in Critical Care and Internal Medicine as a nurse practitioner, I was inspired by healing with this ancient medicine.

Creation:

Creation started with Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space (ether).

From there, it goes on to explain the three main characters or Doshas in Sanskrit: Vata, Pitta, & Kapha

1. VATA (air & ether, space elements) is the energy of movement. All body movements are affected when Vata dosha is out of balance. This includes bones and joints, our thoughts, heartbeat, breathing, digestion, and anxiety.

2. PITTA (fire element) controls transformation & metabolism. When out of balance you may experience fevers, infection, an acidic stomach, skin rash, migraines, and anger.

3. KAPHA (water & earth elements) is the energy of growth, grounding, stability, and love. When out of balance we accumulate ama (toxins) which creates sluggishness. We feel heavy, easily sick, and may develop high cholesterol, obesity, diabetes, tumors & depression.

Based on the present state of Vata, Pitta & Kapha, we decide on a treatment to reach balance and harmony in body, mind, & soul.

Modern research has been increasingly supportive of ancient Ayurvedic remedies like the research on turmeric, fennel, and ashwagandha, which led to their availability in many health stores.

Ayurvedic medicine’s approach to treatment includes individual diet, lifestyle suggestions, herbs, pranayama, meditation, asana & oil treatments.
